GROUP TRAINING COORDINATOR JOB DESCRIPTION

Role Purpose

The Group Training Coordinator is responsible for planning, implementing, and monitoring all training and competency development initiatives across three underground mining operations within the company’s portfolio and the Group as a whole This role ensures that all employees—from underground operators to technical, supervisory, and support staff—receive the necessary skills training, refresher courses, safety training, and professional development to meet operational, regulatory, and company standards.

This position will work closely with the Group HR Manager in establishing the training needs and developing training and development strategies as identified from 1) personal development plans of our talent pool 2) individual performance improvement plans 3) workforce planning

The position plays a critical leadership role in building a high-performance workforce, enhancing compliance, and supporting continuous improvement in safety, productivity and succession planning and developing skills depth across the group.

Key Responsibilities

1. Training Strategy & Planning

  • Develop and implement an annual training plan aligned with operational requirements, regulatory standards, and workforce development objectives.
  • Conduct training needs analysis (TNA) across all three underground operations and Group
  • Establish competency matrices for all critical operational roles (miners, equipment operators, supervisors, electricians, fitters, , truck operators, etc.).
  • Ensure alignment of training programs with national mining regulations and company policies.
  • Matrices and annual training plan alignment with business plan & organizational strategy, vision & objectives

2. Underground Mining Training Coordination

  • Oversee training delivery for all underground mining activities, including:
    • Mine safety and hazard awareness
    • Underground equipment operation
    • Emergency response & mine rescue
    • Ground support and drilling techniques
    • Charging and blasting procedures
    • Ventilation awareness
    • Ground control
  • Coordinate external specialist trainers where necessary (OEM, blasting specialists, rescue services, etc.).
  • Ensure all practical assessments and on-the-job training (OJT) follow competency-based training (CBT) frameworks.

3. Staff Development & Leadership Training

  • Implement soft-skills, leadership, and professional development programs for supervisors, engineers, emerging leaders, and administrative staff.
  • Develop internal trainers and “train-the-trainer” programs to strengthen site-level support.
  • Support succession planning initiatives by identifying skill gaps and training pathways.

4. Compliance & Documentation

  • Maintain accurate training records, training passports, and competency files for all employees.
  • Ensure compliance with Rwandan Mining Board (RMB) & Rwanda Standards Board (RSB) requirements and any international mining standards adopted by the company.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly reports on training progress, costs, participation, and performance metrics.
  • Manage audits and inspections related to training compliance.
  • Implement & maintain rigid Training System & database & comply with Company Training & Development Procedure & standards.

5. Stakeholder Engagement

  • Work closely with the Leadership team, Line Management, and HR teams across all three operations.
  • Liaise with recognised training and educational institutions, regulatory bodies, and equipment suppliers for approved certification programs.
  • Provide coaching and mentorship to site training staff.

6. Continuous Improvement

  • Review training outcomes and operational performance data to update programs and improve effectiveness.
  • Introduce new training methods, including simulation-based training, e-learning, VR tools, and workplace coaching.
  • Support the development of a strong safety culture through training and behavioural programs.
  • Support the development of needs-based training facilities across the respective operations.

Qualifications & Experience

Minimum Qualifications

  • Diploma or Degree in Training & Development, Human Resources, Mining Engineering, or a related field.
  • Certification from a recognised training entity (e.g., accredited assessor/trainer certification, vocational training authority certification, or international mining training accreditation).
  • Formal qualifications in adult learning, competency-based training, or instructional design is an added advantage.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in training coordination, training delivery, Competency assessments, or HRD roles within the mining industry, with at least 5 years in underground mining environments.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and managing training systems across multiple sites.
  • Strong knowledge of underground mining methods (narrow vein, long-hole stopping, cut-and-fill, etc.).
  • Proven experience in implementing competency-based training programs.
  • Experience managing multicultural teams and working in developing or frontier mining jurisdictions (Africa experience highly desirable).
