About us

The Albertine Rift Conservation Society (ARCOS) is a regional conservation organization with the mission to enhance biodiversity conservation and sustainable management of natural resources in the Albertine Rift region, Africa Great Lakes region and African Mountains through the promotion of collaborative conservation actions for nature and people (www.arcosnetwork.org)

Background Information

Since January 2020, the Albertine Rift Conservation Society (ARCOS), a regional non-profit organization, in collaboration with the Government of Rwanda through Rwanda Forestry Authority, Rwanda Environment Management Authority and the districts of Rulindo and Bugesera, is implementing the “Building resilience to climate change and sustainable livelihoods in Rwanda’s agro-ecosystems” project, also named “Agroforestry and Livelihoods Project”. This is a 20-year project funded by the Livelihoods Funds with the aim to build resilient ecosystems for carbon sequestration and to empower a network of community groups as champions of change for inclusive and sustainable livelihoods.

This project involves two main components including:

  • Large-scale tree planting and Sustainable Agricultural Land Management (SALM) to enhance carbon sequestration, water and soil conservation and restoration of ecological functions of the landscapes,
  • Community livelihoods development

In the same framework, ARCOS is supporting beneficiary farmers with small livestock, among other things, to enhance their access to manure and income. These livestock will be provided to best performer farmers in implementing the A4L Project activities including tree planting, tree maintenance, sustainable land management practices, farmer-based business solutions and other transformational initiatives implemented at individual and group levels.
